Each year in South Africa in early October, National Marine Week is celebrated. The government-backed campaign aims to increase awareness of the oceans and coastal environment, promote sustainable use and conservation of marine resources. 50/50, the television programme presenting conservation successes chose to dedicate the programme during National Marine Week to the improvements made with the sourcing of sustainable tuna products for the South African market.
The oceans provide for us but are not inexhaustible resources.
This is the sentiment that, Mmasea, 50/50 presenter emphasised as she reported on the commitments to responsible sourcing that motivated IPNLF Member Woolworths SA’s to bring sustainable tuna from the shores of the Maldives, to South African supermarket shelves. Featuring interviews with IPNLF’s Managing Director Martin Purves, Dr Mohamed Shainee, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture in the Maldives, Latiefa Behardien, Technical Head at Woolworths Long Life Foods and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), this film demonstrates the benefits of pole-and-line fishing to both the marine environment and local fishing communities.
