In order to improve and ensure the sustainability of Indonesian baitfish fisheries, more data are needed on the species targeted, volumes used and mortality rates. IPNLF has been working with partner Asosiasi Perikanan Pole & Line dan Handline (AP2HI), consulting with AP2HI member design standards and mechanisms for self-reporting pole-and-line fishery baitfish usage. Mechanisms have been carefully designed to align with information already implemented by fishing vessels and companies. An online system is being developed to compile, manage and report information including bait species, usage volumes, and tuna:bait ratios. This information will inform management, planning, and support Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) principle requirements.
To support this scheme, IPNLF and AP2HI have designed and developed a baitfish identification manual to assist enumerators and fishing operators to accurately identify and record primary bait species.
