Waitrose is a UK food retailer, selling nearly 3 million cans of own label tuna each year, all under its essential Waitrose brand.
Treating people fairly, treading lightly on the environment are two of Waitrose’s core organisational values. Responsible fishing has been a focus for the supermarket chain since 1998. Waitrose ensures that all fish sold in its stores are not species regarded as endangered or under threat, and wild fish must be caught from well-managed fisheries using responsible fishing methods and be fully traceable from catch to consumer.
Since 2009, all Waitrose canned tuna has been pole-and-line caught. Specifically, all Waitrose canned tuna comes from the Maldives, where the pole-and-line skipjack is MSC-certified.
