National Curriculum

National Curriculum

As part of the scheme to promote best practice within responsible one-by-one tuna fisheries, and following the initiation of short training courses at the Fishermen’s Community and Training Centre (FCTC), the first National Skipper Training Curriculum was launched in 2015. Officially recognised by the Ministry of Education, this curriculum represents a real milestone for the FCTC, enabling fishers to train for a qualification that supports the development of safe and sustainable fisheries.

The curriculum focuses on the topics of oceanography, navigation, environmental awareness, fish handling and on board safety, and can now be taught by education providers nationally, thanks to the governmental recognition.
