Efectos Navales del Atlántico joins the IPNLF supply chain network

The Spanish-headquartered fishing gear manufacturer and supplier furthers its longstanding tuna fishery sustainability commitment by becoming the latest Member of the International Pole & Line Foundation

[05 FEBRUARY 2020/LONDON, UK] Efectos Navales del Atlántico S.L. has become the latest Member of the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF), the only non-profit association that is solely committed to promoting responsible one-by-one tuna fisheries and supply chains

Founded in 1988, Bilbao, Spain-based Efectos Navales del Atlántico is a leading manufacturer of fishing gear, supplying many commercial one-by-one tuna companies around the world with the barbless hooks and other equipment used on their catching vessels.

Through its company-wide focus on enabling fishermen to meet the sustainability requirements of the seafood industry and also the expectations of end-consumers, Efectos Navales specialises in the production and supply of fishing gear that target only select species. Its commitment to responsible fishing practices and healthy oceans led Efectos Navales to be one of the first companies to introduce circle hooks that minimise the impacts of fishing on non-target species and other marine life.

Efectos Navales is a strong supporter of one-by-one tuna fishing, and also recognises the vital contribution that these fisheries make to the survival and development of coastal communities in many challenged regions around the world. It actively partners with fisheries and stakeholders that champion strict sustainability and socially responsible practices.

Alex Lerchundi, Manager at Efectos Navales del Atlántico, says, “From the outset, our company has always sought to support responsible fishing and ocean health. This is why Efectos Navales has been at the forefront of new, species-specific gear technology for more than 30 years. Sustainable tuna fishing ensures that the resource is able to provide essential food and livelihoods for our future generations; there are no alternative ways to achieve this, which is why we look forward to working alongside IPNLF and contributing to its important work.”

Martin Purves, Managing Director of IPNLF, says, “Efectos Navales is a very welcome addition to our Member network as they could add many invaluable insights about operational issues in one-by-one tuna fisheries as an international gear supplier. We look forward to utilising this knowledge and on-the-ground experience as we continue to guide the further progress of the global one-by-one sector.”
