Al Badr Seafoods Pvt. Ltd has become the latest Member of the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF), the non-profit association that is committed to developing and supporting responsible one-by-one tuna fisheries and supply chains.
Located in Cochin, South India, the international processor specialises in the canning of fish and fishery products. It is the sister company of Tunisia-based Al Badr International, and when it was founded in 2005, it was the first canning factory of its kind in India.
Conveniently located close to the Lakshadweep pole-and-line tuna fishery, Al Badr Seafoods processes skipjack and yellowfin tuna, as well as many varieties of other fish species. The company produces 160,000 cans of fish and fishery products daily, including 80,000 cans of sustainable pole-and-line caught tuna.
As part of its quality assurance, the company also has its own in-house laboratory that conducts microbiological and histamine analysis. Its products are exported to markets in Africa, the Caribbean, Middle East, South America and Asia.
Al Badr Seafoods is currently in the process of expanding its facility and extending its product line to incorporate the production of pre-cooked tuna loins and frozen fish. Through this expansion, it expects to produce 100 containers annually.
Dr Yousef Alkouni Alghdr, Managing Director of Al Badr Seafoods, says, “We proudly support the local and sustainable pole-and-line tuna fishery of Lakshadweep as it’s very important that the tuna fisheries that we source from are low impact. As a company on the verge of expansion, we have partnered with IPNLF to help grow our network and ultimately increase the benefits that the pole-and-line fishery brings.”
Al Badr Seafoods joins IPNLF’s growing network of value chain stakeholders from all over the world that are collectively working to enhance one-by-one tuna fisheries and the value that they deliver to the communities connected to them.
Martin Purves, Managing Director of IPNLF, comments, “Al Badr Seafoods illustrates the very strong ties that often exist between processing businesses and coastal fishing operations and we are very pleased to be welcoming Al Badr into our Member network. It’s fantastic that this new partnership extends IPNLF’s reach into India, a region with a great deal of untapped potential in the one-by-one tuna space.”
