Emily Wardrop – The Marine Diaries interviews Zacari Edwards, Socio-Economic Manager at IPNLF

The Marine Diaries was created in 2018 by three marine biologists out of our passion for conservation and belief in the need for better communication about the challenges currently facing our marine environment. As both scientists and ‘millennials’, they believe that now is the time to capitalize on the use of social media as a communicative device; they want to get people across the globe talking about the ocean and making better choices. Through articles, interviews and visual media, the Marine Diaries are determined to change the way that we think about the ocean.

Emily Wardrop interviewed the International Pole and Line Foundation (IPNLF) Socio-Economic Manager Zacari Edwards to discuss, in more detail, the importance of one-by-one fisheries and the work that IPNLF does. Read the blog and watch the highly engaging videos the Marine Diaries solely made for this purpose here!

The interview focuses on the work IPNLF does and Zacari’s role within the organisation. As such, Zac speaks about the global team and projects, how we connect commercial companies to local coastal fishers, ensuring and promoting their participation in the marketplace, and his current representation as coordinator for the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI). You’ll also read about his current projects such as the development of the Sourcing Transparency Platform (STP) and Ghost Gear Retrieval Project.

Most importantly, Zac discussed the threats tuna fisheries are facing today; the one that is probably on everyone’s radar at the moment is the threat of overfishing. Overfishing is a huge problem, however there is hope. One-by-one fisheries are incredibly important for both the coastal communities that they underpin and the long-term health of our ocean. For example, listen to Zac’s argument on why you do not have to cut all seafood out of your diet:
