What We Do

About Us

The International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) works to develop, support and promote socially and environmentally responsible pole-and-line and handline tuna fisheries around the world. IPNLF’s ambition is to contribute to thriving coastal fisheries, including the people, communities, businesses and seas connected with them.

As a hub for sustainably-minded organisations, we use the influence of the market to forge change through practical fishery projects and stakeholder cooperation. IPNLF membership is open to organisations involved in the one-by-one caught tuna supply chain. Allied with our Members, IPNLF demonstrates the value of one-by-one caught tuna to consumers, policymakers and throughout the supply chain.

We work across science, policy and the seafood sector, using an evidence-based, solutions-focused approach with guidance from our Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee and Board of Trustees.

IPNLF was officially registered in the United Kingdom in 2012 (Charity 1145586), with branch offices in London and the Maldives, and a staff presence in Indonesia, South Africa and North America.

Strategic Focus

IPNLF uses a three-year Strategic Focus to direct where we will apply attention, energy and resources over the coming few years. This has been agreed by the Trustees and executive team to give clarity on overall objectives and strategies, while maintaining appropriate flexibility to allow for adoption of new work beyond this focus if considered in line with Vision, Mission, Values

Our current Strategic Focus was approved in Q2 2016 (covering 2015-16; 2016-17; 2017-18) and illustrates IPNLF’s five thematic activity areas and the priorities and anticipated indicators of success therein. The Strategic Focus directs the majority of our efforts - and the kind of team, partnerships and projects we engage with.

We hope this focus provides our Members, funders and partners with clarity on areas of mutual interest and shared aims, and we encourage other collaborators to join us in these efforts and help contribute to a thriving future for coastal tuna fisheries.
